‘Bridges of Madison County’ Charm Broadway in January with Kelli O’Hara, Steven Pasquale

Kelli O’Hara and Steven Pasquale will star in the upcoming Broadway musical version of “The Bridges of Madison County.”

The two are currently starring as an unhappy couple in the Off Broadway musical “Far From Heaven” at the Playwrights Horizons. O’Hara has been associated with the “Bridges” production for some time, though she is currently pregnant and therefore won’t participate in the tryout run of the show to be held this August at the Williamstown Theater Festival in Massachusetts. Pasquale will play the role of photographer Robert Kincaid in that performance, but O’Hara’s role of the housewife Francesca will be played by Elena Shaddow.

The Broadway production of “Bridges” will be staged at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, with previews beginning January 13, 2014. Opening night will be sometime in late February, though an exact date has yet to be announced.

Bartlett Sher, known for “South Pacific,” “The Light in the Piazza” “Golden Boy” will direct the musical, which features a score by Jason Robert Brown and a book by Marsha Norman. Brown won a Tony Award for the score of “Parade,” and Normann won a Tony for “The Secret Garden.”

The musical is based on the 1992 best-selling novel by Robert James Waller, which spawned the 1995 hit film of the same name. That movie starred Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep.

Sher and O’Hara have worked together before in “The LIght in the Piazza,” which earned the latter a Tony nomination for best featured actress in a musical. She’s also been nominated for the Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical three times, for “The Pajama Game,” “South Pacific” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It.”

Steven Pasquale is best known to most for his role as Sean Garrity in “Rescue Me.” He’s also been on television in HBO’s “Six Feet Under.”
