‘The Sunshine Boys,’ ‘Harmony,’ ‘We Will Rock You’ Highlight Broadway LA at Ahmanson

The 2013-2014 season at Los Angeles’ Ahmanson Theatre will feature “The Sunshine Boys,” starring Danny DeVito, Barry Manilow’s “Harmony” and “We Will Rock You.”

The season was just announced by the Center Theatre Group and Ahmanson Theatre, and the season also will include “Peter and the Starcatcher,” “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess,” “Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty” and “The Last Confession.”

“The Sunshine Boys” will open the season and run October 2-November 3. In addition to DeVito, the production will star British stage actor Richard Griffiths, and will be directed by Thea Sharrock. The latter also directed the show’s run last summer at the Savoy Theatre in London.

“This is a strong season that is jam-packed with the best of recent Broadway and West End hits,” said Michael Ritchie, artistic director of the Center Theatre Group, in a statement. “I am eager to see such pros as Danny DeVito and Richard Griffiths take on Neil Simon and his sidesplitting ‘The Sunshine Boys.’ And what an honor to be presenting ‘Harmony,’ a very special musical crafted with such love and care from Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman.”

“Harmony” is reported to have been in the works for over 15 years, and was at one point set to open on Broadway back in 2003. Instead, the musical will make its debut in Atlanta this fall, and will run at the Ahmanson Theatre March 12-April 13, 2014.

Manilow and Susman wrote the music and lyrics for the musical, and Sussman also wrote the book. The musical is inspired by the real Comedian Harmonist, a group of German singers that rose to fame before World War II.

“Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty” will run November 21-December 1, and is not included in the season, but rather as a bonus option. “Peter and the Starcatcher” will run through the holiday season, December 3, 2013-January 12, 2014. After “Harmony” is “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess,” scheduled to run April 22-June 1, 2014. The second season bonus option is “The Last Confession,” which will run June 10-July 6, 2014. “We Will Rock You” closes out the season July 15-August 24, 2014.
