Welcome the summer with a week-long celebration of music, dancing, freedom and the life and journey of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated political and social heroes in the Broadway hit ‘Fela!’, playing the Paramount Theatre from May 28 to June 2, 2013.
To some he was a socio-political hero, to the government he was a leftist, depending on whom you’d ask, Fela Kuti was undoubtedly an integral part of Nigeria’s contemporary history and his contributions to music and pop culture will always be recognized, especially after originating Afrobeat, a music genre combining the best of funky beats, jazz rhythms and the soulful pounding of African drums. Fela’s life and legacy is immortalized in this musical, whose persona is greatly underscored by music and dancing that can be found nowhere else in Broadway.
Show times for ‘Fela!’ in Seattle are at 7:30 PM from May 28 to 30, 8 PM on May 31 and June 1, and 6:30 PM on June 2. Matinee performances are at 2 PM on June 1 and 1 PM on June 2. The performance running time is 2 hours 30 minutes with no intermission.
